His feet padded on the sandy floor of the tunnel. The wound from the javelin had fully reopened, and the blood in his lungs was making it harder to breathe. He’d hurt his left shoulder falling through the roof, and rolling between the skeletons completely dislocated it. The bite on his right forearm had taken enough muscle and nerves away that he couldn’t open or close his right hand. Despite all the injuries, he was still alive, and he’d made it out of the undead city.

The two skeletons still chased him, and the grinding of their bones echoed off the wall until he rounded a curve and went past their vision. Then, all he heard were the sounds of his own faltering footsteps and raspy breath. Gargled words came out of his mouth in slow gasps. “Just keep fighting. One step at a time.”
